ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:  Include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Is available at any time during the day to address critical issues which may affect individuals, groups of individuals or students, faculty and staff campus wide. 
  • Provides assessment and short-term focused therapy for current enrolled students, faculty and/or staff as the need arises.
  • Provides mandatory assessments (along with clinical recommendations) of at-risk students, within the context of the campus Behavioral Intervention Team.
  • Provides assessment, referral and consultation.
  • Provides outreach to the campus community.
  • Serves as a consultant and resource person for faculty and staff regarding the mental health of individual students, faculty and/or staff and the factors affecting the adjustment and mental health of the population.
  • Consults with and/or makes referrals to other professionals and outside agencies.
  • Maintains accurate and complete case files with legal and ethical guidelines of clinical practice.
  • Maintains licensure in good standing with state governing body, including participation in ongoing clinical supervision if applicable.
  • Attends appropriate local, regional and national meetings and conferences for professional development and to represent the University and Canyon Health and Wellness Center.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated excellent judgment and ability to make difficult decisions in potentially life-threatening situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct case conceptualization and treatment plan formulation for students with a broad spectrum of psychological problems, ranging from adjustment issues to major psychiatric disorders required.
  • Knowledge of voluntary/involuntary hospitalization procedures required.
  • Functional knowledge of HIPAA/FERPA laws.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, ability to establish and maintain effective working relations, and ability to work with culturally diverse peoples.
  • Sound analysis, judgment, critical thinking and decision making skills.
  • Strong desire to positively impact people’s lives.
  • Characteristics which inspire respect, trust and confidence.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Adheres and models the code of ethics associated with specialty, license and/or certification.

  • Knowledge of psychological and counseling theory, principles, practices and techniques.

  • Ability to quickly and accurately recognize and prescribe solutions to problems.
  • Ability to operate a PC or laptop and a proficiency with basic office software.
  • Maintains currency in licensing, knowledge, contemporary ideas and trends through training.
  • Must undergo and successfully pass background checks.
  • Willing to work various hours and days of the week as necessary.

Education and/or Experience

  • Master’s degree in counseling, mental health, psychology, therapy or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Possesses current licensure (in good standing) as an LPC, LCSW, LMFT, LAC, MSW, or LAMFT from the state of Arizona is required.
  • Clinical experience as a generalist; able to effectively treat many different mental health diagnoses required.
  • Experience working with young adults in a highly relational setting is desirable.
  • Experience working effectively with a wide range of people, inclidnig persons from diverse backgrounds is desirable.
  • Experience in a college or university counseling center is desirable.

The following physical demands are estimated by the amount of time spent.  Usually, the amount of time spent will be estimated on a daily basis, but depending on the position could be estimated on a weekly basis or a monthly basis.

Constantly:  60%+ or 5-8 hrs/shift                  Occasionally:  10%-25% or 1-2 hrs/shift

Frequently:  25%-60% or 4-5 hrs/shift            Rarely:  <10% or less than 2 hrs/shift

  • Work is performed primarily in a professional environment and is more than 50% sedentary.
  • Work occasionally involves using a computer keyboard preparing reports which involves the use of hands, wrists, fingers, shoulders and forearms.
  • Occasionally involves the use of a computer monitor or computer output to peruse, assess, compare, research, interpret, analyze data and information from a variety of sources including manuals, journals, internet sources, documents and spreadsheets.
  • Occasionally involves standing, walking, reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, climbing.
  • Rarely involves lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequently involves the ability to communicate with others through a variety of means including in person, telephonically or other readily available technology and utilize active listening and accurate decoding of information.
  • Occasionally requires the ability to move about the medical clinic, campus and office environment which may involve climbing stairs.
  • Rarely involves hazardous situations where physical harm is a possibility.
  • Constantly requires mental acuity to follow protocols; for planning, organizing, assessing information, analyzing data; the ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities, tasks and activities; and the ability to cope while under stress.
